2012 Consultation - Online Forum

Tuesday, 8 July 2008

The key objectives 2012 presents for the Yorkshire tourism industry are twofold:

1) To generate higher visitor spend than otherwise, especially from targeted countries and in niche markets.
2) To enhance perceptions of Yorkshire and the Humber as outward facing, culturally rich and internationally connected - in short, a great place to live and visit.

Yorkshire, as a region, is perfectly situated, connected and desirable as a destination to enjoy during and post the Games. The region can expect to directly benefit from a proportion of England's success and can reap its own returns off the back of 2012 by clever marketing and by the Yorkshire tourism industry embracing the wealth of opportunities available and working together for collective benefit and mutual returns.

Looking ahead to 2012, England can expect a 50 - 70% economic benefit of staging the Games to accrue through tourism. Early estimates suggest that the Games may generate around £2 billion for Britain's international visitor economy. Almost two-thirds of this growth will occur in the four years after the Games. In addition, 40% of additional inbound tourism revenue is expected to be spent outside London.

Yorkshire has a real opportunity to use 2012 as a catalyst from which to reach into new markets. There is also a big opportunity to boost domestic holiday taking and to create real appeal for the Yorkshire brand in emerging markets. But this won't happen automatically. A collective effort by the Yorkshire tourism industry and key partners is essential in ensuring that the tourism benefit for the region is maximised.

You can help make 2012 a reality for the Yorkshire tourism industry by joining in the debate to identify the opportunities and challenges facing the Yorkshire tourism industry.
